Day 10 - Monday, June 28 - Howard's

Day 10 - Monday, June 28 - Howard's

This will be an easy day.

Renate, Steve and I had breakfast in the Marriott's "circ" restaurant.

I got the $15 buffet to include eggs, lox, etc.  Steve and Renate ordered a la carte.

Again me and gyms. A nice one at the Marriott on the 3rd floor, adjoining their indoor pool.

Checked out the Reading Terminal.
It's one block across the Marriott's 3rd floor pedestrian bridge, then a block north, on street level.

It's filled with NON-chain vendors. Closed Sundays. Wonderful place to wander and get cheap lunch, produce, etc. Real people shop there.

I made the drive to Howard's using Mark's GPS. I don't argue how pleasant they are. And when I turned wrong, it was good at correcting me.

Dinner was burgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers.  Great salads. Howard and Nicole's oldest son, Benjamin, lives with them. The other two sons - Josh and Alexander -  were summoned from their homes to be present for our visit.
As a 60th birthday present - a few years ago - Howard cajoled his sons to learn 2 barbershop songs. In Howard's version of the story, they enjoyed it so much that they consented - over a few years time - to learn two more.
"The Agran Boys" have done weddings, bar mitzvahs,   and now, College reunions. They sounded great, having (naturally) a really good blend. "My Wild Irish Rose"  and "From the First Hello"  are in their repertoire.

Josh makes a modest living in a hard core band (Paint it Black), which has a select following.  He also makes money playing guitar and singing at young children's parties!

PAINT IT BLACK is Dan Yemin - Vocals, Josh Agran - Guitar, Andy Nelson - Bass,Jared Shavelson - Drums

PAINT IT BLACK "AMNESIA" 7"EP/DIGITAL OUT NOW !

Paint It Black is the most consistent band in hardcore. They have made one thing known-they are going to give you hardcore that is melodic at times, ferocious and discordant at others and Dan Yemin's lyrics will be angry, poignant and at times, humorous and sarcastic. Most bands with this pedigree would rest on their laurels, but as Paint It Black has shown the only thing they’re going to do every time is mix it up- one minute is uncomfortable and furious, the next minute cathartic and energetic, and closing with "Bliss"-the song described by Yemin as "sounding like Fugazi having a three-way with Jawbreaker and Nirvana."

Howard -after many years with OSHA - has been out of law practice awhile, and is now an employee for his brother's import business!  While he often does office work, long hours of packing and unpacking HEAVY crates is not denied by his job description.

Mark, Howard, I ( = 3/4 of The Cobblestones, our 1970ish college quartet) plus Steve sang a few old numbers. We almost stayed long enough for Renate to watch the new episode of "Drop Dead Diva", which was NOT available at the Marriott!

We left, knowing we would see Howard, Nicole, and Benjamin again at a few of the Barbershop competitions.

After announcing that I'd rely on Howard's instructions to get home, I promptly made a wrong turn out of his driveway! It was definitely my misunderstanding. Luckily, my twinge of doubt and everyone else's listening skills set me right.
It was a MUCH longer route using mostly Interstates to loop down to the airport and sports stadiums. Philadelphia seemed small on the darkened horizon.

The next morning I would have to be at the airport at 8:30 am. So I wanted to park in the street to save $10 (legal if moved before 8 am).  Mark rode shotgun as I tried to find a spot.

Luckily - we had the "Handicapped" sticker. It worked. Thanks Axel.
