Day 24 - Monday July 12 - Chicago and Oak Park

Day 24: Monday July 12

Interstates 94 and 90 took us from the Best Western in Morton Grove to downtown Chicago.
Renate and I toured Chicago's State street and Michigan Ave.
We enjoys these types of drives, filled with shoppers and diners.

It was an imitation of the tour Liz gave me yesterday when Renate was laid up with a bad back. I reminded Renate what Liz told me about looking on Michigan Avenue, but buying on State Street.

We're both amazed at how easy traffic flows, although one-way streets get frustrating.
Renate says hands-down Chicago beats New York for views, traffic, wide streets, pedestrian watching.

We took the Chicago Line Architectural Cruise from the North Pier. (See  www.chicagoline.com )
Here's samples of their brochure:

Incredibly non-stop talk of dozens of buildings, dates, styles, architects, history. Our guide was a 50 something woman history major who had been doing the tour for 8 years and knew and loved the stuff inside-out.

Left photo - our guide.
Right photo - my finger and rare apartments on river that are permitted to block public access along river at night.

Some uninspired tourists. But it WAS hot!

BTW, we parked free 1 block from the boat. Handicapped parking! Thanks Axel for insisting Renate take along the Handicap Parking Permit. Used it in Oak Park and in DC for free parking and ...somewhere else when no other spots possible.

Afterwards, I drove into Liz's neighborhood - Oak Park. Showed off by (eventually) finding the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio

The neighborhood had many of his designs plus other gorgeous homes. (Thanks Liz).

We had lunch outdoors at Oak Park's Prairie Bread Kitchen.

After lunch, I took Harlem Ave. back to our motel in Morton Grove. Took about the same time as using the Interstate, at 4:30 pm.

I'm off to a nearby Bally's for about 40 minutes.
